The early signs are promising, says Welling Town boss Kevin Oakes after beating Chipstead 7-2 in pre-season warm-up

WELLING TOWN manager/chairman Kevin Oakes says the early signs coming from his squad during this pre-season are promising.

The Boots kick-off their Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division campaign in two weeks’ time with a trip into East Sussex to take on Crowborough Athletic.

Taylor Robinson notched a hat-trick in today’s 7-2 win over Kent County League Division One West side Chipstead, with Billy Muckle, Carl Oblitey, Richard Jimoh and Ollie Bennett also getting on the scoresheet.

“The individual quality at the moment within a large squad is very strong,” said Oakes.

“We’ve got the challenge to ensure that we blend them together as a unit and with the help of (coaches) Antony Gradley and Ben Kotey, whose experience and input is without question.

“I know I’ve got a very strong group alongside me off the field and if between us we can get a tune out of the 18-20 talented lads in the squad and overcome the niggles, the Covid issues and the fitness two stop-start seasons bring, we’ll turn very good individuals into a solid team.

“The early signs are promising and that is to the credit of the players for their huge efforts already.”

Welling Town will be playing their home games in Dartford this season, sharing First Division side Kent Football United’s ground at Lowfield Street.
