We are in a good place at the moment but it’s all come from good old fashioned traits and values, says Welling Town boss Danny Wakeling

WELLING TOWN manager Danny Wakeling says the club is in a good place at the moment.

 

The Boots are in tenth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table, courtesy of picking up 11 points from their seven games.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our lads adjustment to Steve Five,” said Wakeling.

“They’ve knuckled down, shown the requisite attitude and given everything in terms of application recently and that creates the platform for their undoubted ability to shine.

“But, they’re also aware that a 1% drop in attitude and application and there’s a hungry talented players just waiting to snatch their place.

“We really have managed to foster and proper family minded tight knit spirit in the club and that’s all credit to Michael Walsh, Abdul Habib, Metin Gozde as well as senior players James Day and Chris Round.

“They make sure the levels are bang on point at all times. I’m incredibly proud of that unit and the environment that’s being created. It’ll stand us in great stead throughout the year and we know full well that we will need to rely upon it too.

“Our link with our second XI is prospering fantastically well. Tristan Cropley and I work closely and a good number of second XI’s have already made a dent at SCEFL Premier level. The flip side is when we’ve placed first XI lads into second XI football they’ve taken on the challenge with aplomb and delivered too. No heirs or graces - everyone just gets on with things and it’s fantastic to see.

“I’m pleased Kevin Oakes is starting to see his club prosper slowly at this level. He’s 24/7 and I’m happy to work with a chairman like that.  He wants the best all the time and it drives the enthusiasm within the club.

“We are in a good place at the moment but it’s all come from good old fashioned traits and values - I just can’t run things any other way and I make zero apologies for that.”

Welling Town welcome Lordwood to Bayliss Avenue tomorrow on a six match unbeaten run, having won their last four games in league and cup.

Darren Anslow’s Lordswood, meanwhile, are three places lower, having banked two wins and two draws from their six league outings and are without a win in their last three.

“We go into tomorrow’s game bereft of a couple of talented lads but also with a couple returning and the highly anticipated debut of (former Fisher captain) Rob Brown too,” said Wakeling.

“Talent doesn’t win games alone but these lads have already grasped the fact that team work and tenacity enables talent to come to the fore and we are very much looking forward to returning to ultra-competitive action tomorrow.”
