Welling United fans' launch Boost the Budget scheme

WELLING UNITED supporters’ are putting their hands in their pockets to bolster Jamie Day’s playing budget next season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings, who were deducted five points last season due to their financial problems, missed out on a place in the Blue Square Bet South play-off’s by just one point.

Player-manager Jamie Day has revealed that his playing budget has been reduced, but once again supporters of the Park View Road outfit have agreed to help out.

A spokesman for Wings United Supporters’ Association (WUSA), said: “As we are all aware it has been necessary for the club to reduce the playing budget for next season.

“Equally we are all aware that Jamie has managed to retain a substantial number of last year’s squad, the majority of whom are under 24 and hence had to be offered terms no less than they were on last season.

“Bearing both of these facts in mind it is clear that the remaining budget restricts Jamie’s ability to add players he would like to sign to the squad.
WUSA, who last season supplemented the playing budget during the last seven weeks, have agreed to add £112.50 per week to the playing budget throughout the coming season.

“Additionally, they have picked up on the suggestion from several supporters that there may be some who would commit to making a weekly contribution to the playing budget to maximise what is available for the new season and are therefore launching a Boost the Budget Scheme.”

The scheme allows for any supporter who is in a position to and would like to participate to contribute whatever sum per week they determine (minimum £1).

In order to make the scheme manageable participants in the scheme will be asked to make their contributions on a monthly basis via a standing order with their bank.
