Welling United sell striker Andy Pugh to Cambridge United for £15,000
The Wings have confirmed that the former Gillingham striker has been snapped up by the Blue Square Bet Premier outfit for £15,000, plus add ons.
A club statement, published on www.wellingunited.com, said: “The transfer has been drawn out since the beginning of January because of a knee injury but Jamie Day confirmed that the medical was taking place today.”
The former Gillingham striker has been in sensational form for the Wings this season, scoring 15 goals in the league and winning the player-of-the-month award three times out of five.
Pugh said: “Welling have given me a great opportunity and I’d like to think that I have given them a lot back and scored some vital goals.
“I want to thank everyone at Welling who has believed in me – from Jamie and the coaching staff down to the fans – and I’m sure they know I have given them everything I could.
“I’m sure under Jamie Day they will be fine and carry on fighting for the play-off spots.”
Player-manager Day, meanwhile, paid tribute to the departing striker.
He said: “Andy has been excellent since signing for us. He has been a pleasure to work with and he has a great attitude.
“I know all the management and boys wish him all the best of luck at Cambridge.”
Pugh started his career at Gillingham, where he was limited to nine substitute appearances, and had a loan spell at Cambridge United’s local rivals Histon in March 2010, scoring once, against the Us, in six games before switching to Welling United in the summer of 2010.
Cambridge United boss Jez George told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: “His injury is fine but he hasn’t trained for three-and-a-half weeks.
“We’ve got to be sensible. We’ve signed Andy for two-and-a-half years and not two-and-a-half weeks.”
Cambridge United snapped up left-back Harrison Dunk from Bromley last summer.
The Wings welcome fellow play-off chasers Chelmsford City to Park View Road on Saturday (3pm).
