We'll keep out feet on the ground, says table-topping Hessenthaler
DOVER ATHLETIC boss Andy Hessenthaler is trying to keep his players’ feet on the ground, following their 3-2 win over second placed side Staines Town yesterday.
The Whites are now nine points clear at the top of the Ryman Premier League table, having sealed their tenth straight league win at Wheatsheaf Park yesterday, which also inflicted the Swans’ first league defeat on home soil.
“I sensed a bit of a celebration in the changing room afterwards and that (ended) very quickly because we don’t do that because it’s far too early,” Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent, after his side’s thirteenth league outing.
“We didn’t do that last year (on our way to the Ryman League Division One South title) and we won’t do that this year.
“There’s still a long, long way to go, a lot of football to be played, but we’ve put ourselves in a good position, so far but we won’t get carried away.
“We’ll keep out feet on the ground and keep grinding out results.
“Don’t get me wrong, (Staines) are a very good side and they’ll be up there at the end of the season without a doubt but we’ve started to give ourselves a bit of a cushion.
“We’ve got a week without a game and we’ll look forward to the (home to bottom-of-the-table) Heybridge game next week and keep it going. That’s the key, it’s a challenge for us now to keep it going.”
