SITTINGBOURNE manager Richard Brady says he understands the importance of beating lower league opposition in the FA Cup on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney. The Brickies, who are suffering with floodlighting problems at Bourne Park at present, welcome Sussex County League side Peacehaven & Telscombe in the preliminary round and with £1,500 up for grabs to the winner, Brady is looking for victory.
“People talk to me about the FA Cup and the prize money, but ultimately you should want to do well in the competition,” said Brady.
“If you go on a good run, it’s great for the morale of the team – any money is a bonus!
“I don’t think any of my players are playing in it for that reason – we’ll try and get through Saturday and play better teams and go as far as we can!”
Peacehaven & Telscombe are presently in fourth place in the top flight of the Sussex County League, with three wins and a draw from their opening five league outings.
Brady said: “I don’t know a lot about Peacehaven - I know that they're in the league below, but you can say that we're favourites.
“In the FA Cup, we all know that there are upsets, but I don’t think Peacehaven v Sittingbourne will be the biggest one and we're going to give it our very best efforts to get into the ensure we get as far as we can.
“I've always liked the FA Cup and the FA Trophy - I think they're massive cups - I don’t think that we'll win them though but I hope that we'll enjoy it and go as far as we can.
“I've had a couple of good cup runs in my career when we've gone quite a way which is great and from the clubs point of view there is also the financial gains of course.”
Brady spoke about team personnel, ahead of the crucial clash, saying “We'll be without Bryan Glover who's injured his remedial ligaments the other day, which we're waiting on, but other than that we've got a reasonably clean bill of health.”
