We may have to cut the budget, warns Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day hopes to persuade Gillingham boss Mark Stimson to allow Andy Pugh to stay at Park View Road for a second month, writes Stephen McCartney.
The 20-year-old striker has scored twice in six games whilst on loan at the Blue Square South club and Day hopes to keep him for a second month.
“We’ve spoken to Mark Stimson, as long as he’s happy to stay and we can do it money wise, we’ll definitely do it for another month,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk, following his side’s FA Carlsberg Trophy exit to the hands of workmanlike Eastbourne Borough yesterday.
“Hopefully we’ll get something sorted in the next week.”
Day admits to having to need as many numbers available to him at Park View Road, as he prepared for a congested festive programme.
The Wings travel to Hampton & Richmond Borough this coming Saturday, before welcoming local rivals Bromley to Park View Road on Saturday, 26th December (1pm), before a trip to St Albans City follows two days later before the return clash with Bromley at Hayes Lane on New Years Day.
“We’ve got to knuckle down and we go to Hampton on Saturday and (try to) get something from there and then we’ve got games thick and fast over the Christmas period where we’ve got to pick up points over those three or four games,” said Day.
The former Dartford midfielder says he must balance the books if he is to add numbers to his playing squad.
“Hopefully we might bring one or two in just to get the squad up to a reasonably number,” added Day.
“I said to the players, we’ve got a tough month in this month and everyone will be used. There will be times where players get injured and (pick up) little knocks so the whole squad that we’ve got will be tested.”
Welling United missed out on picking up £5,000 in prize money from the Football Association after losing yesterday’s first round tie so money remains tight, especially as the club operate without a club sponsor.
“Getting something today would’ve helped money wise,” admitted Day. “We haven’t got lots of money to splash around. We’re on the budget now so I think before anyone does come in we’ve got to let players go.
“I want to try and keep the squad that we’ve got now, if possible, but the next month or so it might change.
“We might have to cut the budget or look to get rid off a couple to bring one in. We’ll see how it goes.”
