We might have a better chance of finishing in the top half, says Fisher boss Billy Walton

Wednesday 26th March 2014
FISHER manager Billy Walton says he wants the club to break into the top half of the table for the first time next season.

The Fish have been in the Kent League/Southern Counties East Football League for five seasons and their best campaign was in season 2011-12 when they finished in tenth-place with 36 points.

This season the club are in the bottom four with a record of five wins and five draws from their 25 league outings and Walton wants his side to finish strongly in their last seven games.

Fisher held title-chasing Ashford United to a 2-2 draw on Monday night, courtesy of Bermondsey boy Danny Maguire volleying home a deserved equaliser at the death.

“I want us to play like we did on Monday night,” said Walton.

“I want us to play more football. I want us to keep the ball, play on the floor and basically I want the club that wherever we go, I want the players to be proud to wear the Fisher shirt and put in performances like that for the last seven games.

“I’d love to win all of them. I know it’ll be hard but I’d love to win the last seven games because I think the more games we win the better chance I’ve got of being here next year.”

Walton must keep the likes of midfield playmaker Maguire at the club if they are to break into the top half of the table for the first time.

Maguire – who lives close to the site of the new stadium – is a driving force at the club where he has the title of leading goalscorer this season with ten goals.

When asked about his thoughts on next season, Walton replied: “I’ve thought about it a lot. It will most probably be another tough year until we get back home because of the money restrictions we’ll have.

“But I just want to try to get a side together that can play and if we can keep the nucleus of the players we’ve got here – and I hope that they stay – and we can try to nick a few who want to play football on the floor and entertaining stuff we might have a better chance next year of finishing in the top half.

“That’s what I’d like to do and just build and build and build.  It’s going to be hard with no money whatsoever. It’s very hard but I won’t complain about that.

“Corinthian and Beckenham have no money and they do really well. It can be achieved if you work hard.”

Fisher play their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday when they entertain sixth-placed Erith Town.

Walton deployed a long throw from Tom Carr to grab a last-grasp equaliser against Ashford United on Monday night and joked that his central defender faces a competition with Russell Bedford.

Walton quipped: “They’ve got someone who can throw the ball even further than us so we might have a competition with them on Saturday, who can throw the ball the furthest!

“I’m looking forward to it, see if we can have a game against one of the top sides.”
