We mustn't get left-back in play-off hunt, says Ward - EXCLUSIVE

Friday 23rd May 2008

MANY KENT sides are showing aspirations of qualifying for the Ryman Premier League play-off’s in 12 months time - and Ramsgate are no different, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Rams, who finished their last campaign in fifth place, qualified for the play-off’s, but were defeated 2-1 at a sodden Staines Town in the semi-finals.

And although the west London side lost to AFC Wimbledon in the final, Rams boss Jim Ward, like many other Kent managers, is vying for the end of season lottery.

“Finishing in the play-off’s for this football club would still be massive,” Ward said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.

“It’s our aim and our other aim is to get my chairman some help with a good cup run. Maybe it’s Ramsgate’s turn to have another good Cup run.”

The Rams reached the first round proper of the FA Cup three seasons ago, losing at Nuneaton Borough, who held Premier League side Middlesbrough later in the competition, in the first round proper.

Ward tied up Warren schulz and Ben Laslett to new two-year contracts this week and has signed Brett Kinch, a player who has been given his chance, having impressed during a local Cup final.

“I’ve still got people to talk to,” explained Ward. “I’m speaking to a prominent left-back, who I am hoping will join in. I’m away for the weekend (in Bognor Regis) so I won’t find out until Tuesday - I can’t tell you (his identity) until Tuesday.

“My phone doesn’t stop ringing, it’s a great sign. We’re the fifth top team in Kent, I’m hoping this is not Ramsgate’s pinnacle, so we’re just looking forward to whatever awaits us - we’re waiting to progress.”
