We must remain focused and collect three points, says Hume

MAIDSTONE UNITED joint-manager Lloyd Hume is relishing the party atmosphere on their first ever visit to Princes Park on Saturday – but says it’s vital to pick up three points against in-form Dartford, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Darts go into the game on a run of thirteen points from their last five games, and Tony Burman’s men leapfrogged over the Stones in sixth place in the Ryman Premier League last weekend.

Although both Kent giants are level on 37 points, both sides will be hoping that Carshalton Athletic, the side who occupy the final play-off berth, slip up at Ashford Town (Middlesex), so victory in the Kent showdown will enhance their play-off chances.

"It’s always a big game anyway," said Hume, when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk this lunchtime. "There’s a lot of history between the two clubs.

"Again, it’s one of the local derbies, Tonbridge and Dartford are probably the closest teams to us and the fact that they went above us, when we didn’t play, adds some extra spice to it.

"It’s a game we’re looking forward to – we haven’t had the pleasure of going to their stadium yet and experiencing the atmosphere and we’re very much looking forward to that as a club.

"A lot of people are saying there will be over two thousand. When we played Tonbridge and Dover there were fantastic atmospheres and if it’s anything like them it will be an enjoyable day.

"But we need to make sure that we get what we go there for, which is the three points, and stop worrying about how many supporters’ are there, and how nice the ground is to a certain agree, and we’ve got to focus on the job in hand."

Hume says whoever loses on Saturday will not blow their chances of sealing a place in this season’s play-off’s.

"The reality is there’s still a long way to go and there’s a load of points to play for," he said.

"Whether we win or draw at Dartford on Saturday, obviously it will aid us in terms of our push for the play-off’s, but the reality is any one team that strings four or five games together at some point in the next eight weeks will be in the play-off’s, if they are in the top ten now.

"Dartford have just proved that, some six or seven weeks ago, Dartford were down the bottom and looking quite precarious and Tony has done a great job and turned them around and now they’re (one place below) the play-off’s.

"Whilst Saturday is a huge game, it won’t be a decider who will get in the play-off’s. The sides who put a run together, like Dartford are doing at the moment, and continues that form will be the team that will get in the play-off’s.

Looking at the Ryman Premier League table, The Stones are one of nine clubs that have a better away record than at home.

And Hume added, "To be honest we’re a side who likes to play football and we’ve got good footballers in our side.

"And whilst our groundsman is doing a fantastic job, our pitch doesn’t suite us now.

"We look forward to going away, our supporters seem to turn up in more numbers, which is disappointing because we need them to turn up at home.

"When we go away from home they are absolutely fantastic and I don’t expect any different on Saturday."

Hume revealed that goalkeeper Andy Walker "has a good chance of being back", from his shoulder injury, but central defender Ian Cox has been ruled out through work commitments.
