We must take our chances, says Firkins

Wednesday 13th August 2008

GREENWICH BOROUGH manager Steve Firkins has warned Holmesdale that once his side get their goalscoring boots on there will be no stopping them, writes Stephen McCartney.

Boro’ impressed during their opening Bulmers Cider Kent League game at Erith Town on Monday, winning 2-1 courtesy of an early Ryan Watts goal and an injury time winner from substitute Joseph Ogoo - the only surviving player from last season’s squad.

They were pegged back by a stunning Marcus Cassius screamer but ran out deserved winners in front of Erith Town’s largest home league crowd since September 2007.

Left full-back Watts arrowed in an angled left-footed strike inside the opening five minutes after left-sided winger Kyle Demetrius cut back a fifth minute corner to him.

And former Corinthian-Casuals’ reserve team manager Firkins told www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “We do like to get our full-backs forward and we try and encourage all our players to shoot on target if they see a chance.

“I know we can actually play a little bit better.”

Holmesdale coach Hugo Langton was one of many past and present managers that must have been impressed with Boro’s young side’s version of slick football.

But the Bromley based side produced the third shock of the new season, defeating leading lights Beckenham Town 3-2 last night, courtesy of a 26 minute first half hat-trick from striker Joel Hughes.

“We want to win every game as any manager would in this division, I would imagine,” added Firkins.

“We’ll do a little bit this week, a bit of light training and then we go into Saturday.

“I don’t know much about Holmesdale, they’ve had a decent pre-season. We give all teams the amount of respect that we have to and we literally take each game as it comes.”

Firkins said he was impressed with central midfielder Kevin Sefaah, Watts, but was full of praise for tiny striker Louis Bajuex, the son of assistant manager Jim.

“I felt one of our strikers up front, Louis Bajeux done a lot of work, a hell of a lot of work,” he said.

“He (may be small) but he can get up as well. He’s not frightened. He’s a handful and we like him.

“Overall, I’d say Louis and Ryan Watts were the picks for me.”

But Firkins knows his side should have scored more goals against Erith Town during their impressive showing.

“To be honest with you, for the last 5 minutes, I was quite happy with the one-all,” he said.

“We could have (scored more goals) but that’s something we’ve got to work on.

“If you’re creating chances, we’ve got to put them away.

“Fair play to Erith, they didn’t have many but the one that they did have, they scored and we emphasised that at half-time.

“You could have 90% of the possession and not put your chances away and you’re going to get caught.

“We’ve got to learn that our finishing was maybe poor really and that’s something that we’ve got to work on but to be fair we worked hard, we’ve come away with a 2-1 win. I think most people would take that!”
