We must take our cup form into the league, says Seager
WHITSTABLE TOWN manager Marc Seager has challenged his side to take their cup heroics into their remaining league games, writes Stephen McCartney.
Eight days ago, The Oystermen knocked Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels out of the Kent Senior Cup.
Despite being outplayed, Whitstable managed to hold Tommy Warrilow’s side to a 1-1 draw after extra time and went on to win 5-4 on penalties.
And two nights ago, Marcos Perona’s 52nd minute strike was enough to knock local rivals Sittingbourne out of the Ryman League Cup.
But Seager, speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk, remains puzzled that his side can pick up results against two Kent sides in the cups, yet suffer a shocking 4-0 defeat at Godalming Town in the middle.
"One minute we can take on the best and beat them, the next we don’t even get out of the dressing room," he said.
"Saturday (at Godalming) was the worst performance of my managerial career, yet we hardly gave a decent Sittingbourne side a look in.
"All over the pitch we were strong, at the back, strong in midfield and upfront, lone striker Dave Cory worked ever so hard, as did Ian Pulman when he replaced Corey.
"They had one real chance all night, young Dylan MacVicar saving well low down by the post and that was it, we; on the other hand opened them up with some great moves, it was just a pity that we did not find the net a few more times.
"That said, even though there was just the one goal in it they never put us under any real pressure during the whole ninety minutes."
Whitstable welcome Walton Casuals to the KRBS Belmont Ground on Saturday, a contest that can be described as a must-win game for the North Kent club.
Whitstable have picked up just one point from their last six games and as a result are second from bottom in the Ryman League Division One South table with 14 points from 19 games.
However, on the plus side, if they do end their barren run with a victory, then the Belmont boys will climb above their Surrey opponents in the table.
And Seager added: "I am pleased with the way we played (on Monday) night but I told the players after the game that it will count for nothing unless we take the commitment and desire we showed into our league matches."
