We need a slice of luck, says Munday

Monday 12th October 2009
WHITSTABLE TOWN boss Mark Munday says his side will inflict Chatham Town’s first home defeat of the season tomorrow night - if they cut out individual errors, writes Stephen McCartney.

Munday blamed individual errors for their FA Trophy exit at Walton & Hersham (which they lost 3-1 on penalties after the replay at Stompond Lane finished all-square at 3-3 after extra time) and Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Leatherhead.

Munday, however, remains upbeat ahead of the derby at Maidstone Road tomorrow night, when he spoke to www.kentishfootball.co.uk on the eve of the game against Alex O’Brien’s side.

“The results haven’t been great over the last three weeks but our performances have not warranted the results that we’ve got,” said Munday.

“We go there full of confidence in our own ability and our own performance levels.  All we really need is a slice of luck and a bit of good fortune and maybe cut out a few individual errors and I think it’s got the makings off a good game.”

Despite his side sitting in the bottom three in the Ryman League Division One South table with a record of just two wins from seven outings, Munday remains upbeat.

“I’m started to get a little bit of the hump really as I’m coming off saying well done but we lost,” he said of their defeat to Leatherhead.

“It’s just individual errors at crucial times that we’re being severely punished for at the moment.

“If you take into account the last two games, the Walton & Hersham replay and on Saturday, two individual errors have ultimately cost us a place in the next round of the Cup and ultimately cost us a point - if not three against Leatherhead  - because we were definitely the side in the ascendancy.  We were playing well and it knocked the stuffing out of us.”

Despite their lowly league position, Whitstable Town will start picking up points.

“We’ve got the makings of picking up some decent results,” insisted Munday.  “I’m not too downbeat about the results as we stand.  Yes, it would be nice to get points, but if we’re getting opened up or being cut apart by teams then I would be worried.  We are more than holding our own.

“When people speak to me afterwards it’s as though we’ve won as I’m pleased with the performances that we’re giving.  The results haven’t come our way yet but I’m sure they will.”

Gary Sayer, meanwhile, pulled his hamstring on Saturday and will therefore be out of action for at least two weeks, whilst Dan Tanner misses the derby game through work commitments.

www.kentishfootball.co.uk will be covering this game with Mike Green reporting from Maidstone Road.
