We need to make our home games as tough as possible for other teams, says Welling boss Jamie Day

The Wings clinched the Conference South title last season and have played two games in the top-flight of non-league football this week and are in seventeenth-place in the table at this early stage.

They went down to a 2-1 defeat away to Welsh giants Wrexham on the opening day of the season, but they bounced back by claiming a point against Cambridge United in a pulsating 2-2 home draw at Park View Road last night.

Welling United have now extended their unbeaten home record to 25 games after goals from Ross Lafayette and Peterborough-based captain Lee Clarke stunned Cambridge, who equalised through a fine strike from substitute Nathan Arnold.

Day, 33, said last night that his side must make Park View Road a difficult place for other teams to come to.

The Wings welcome Grimsby Town on Saturday and Day said: “It’s going to be another tough game. I think the three teams that we get to play this week will all be there or there abouts.

“But they’re teams that we want to be playing. No disrespect to teams where we’ve just come from but when you look at the fixtures and you’ve got Wrexham, Cambridge and Grimsby and I look at the boys and after Saturday what they experienced and last night they’ll want to be playing at this level.

“It’s going to be difficult. They’ll probably going to have a few tired legs so they have to look after themselves.

“It’s going to be a tough game but again one that we’re looking forward to. With the home form that we’ve got we’ll take that into it but again a team where they’ve come from should be beating us but if we can keep on playing how we have done, keep playing with that enthusiasm and drive then I don’t think the first win is too far away.”

Day said his players must take advantage of home comforts at Park View Road and being a newly-promoted side.

“It might work in our favour,” he said.  “Big clubs are coming down and instead of playing in front of three, four or five thousand in a home game with all-seater stadiums and big attendances and you come here and hopefully it works in our favour.

“I think the other teams that are similar to us that have got similar sort of grounds will say the same. We need to make our home games as tough as possible for other teams and get on them and get on the front foot and not make it easy for them.”

Day was pleased that a crowd of 1,010 watched the club’s first game back in the Conference – on the same night that England defeated Scotland 3-2 at Wembley Stadium.

He said: “That has got to continue all season. It’s going to be important for the club. We’ve reached the Conference so everyone needs to embrace it and they need to get here watching and supporting the team.

“I think we’ve got to be looking for one thousand every game, maybe a bit more on a Saturday and if we can do that then it’s only going to take the club forward so hopefully that can continue.”
