We're aspiring to do better than last season, vows new Sevenoaks boss

SEVENOAKS TOWN’S new man at the helm, Keith Levett, says he wants to continue the hard work of his predecessor, writes Stephen McCartney.
Simon Jones parted company with the Greatness Park outfit during the summer, after guiding the club to it’s highest ever finish in the Kent League - sixth - and runners-up in the Kent League Cup.
Levett arrives from Welling United, although he is still the Academy manager at the Blue Square Bet South outfit, and he’s looking forward to the season ahead.
“In an ideal world we’d have a squad assembled earlier on in the season but that hasn’t been the case, so we’re trying to build a squad as we’ve come through and at the moment it’s coming together nicely,” Levett told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
Levett gets his Sevenoaks career underway with a home game against Norton Sports, who are ruing the loss of target man Andy Irvine, who suffered a thigh injury at the end of last night’s training session.
He said: “We’ve been doing a lot of work in preparation for it so I think everyone’s keen to get started, players, the coaches and myself, so we’re all looking forward to it.
“I think we’re aspiring to do as well (as Simon Jones last season). We’d like to be competing and we think we are and we’ve got the players down there to do as good a job.
“It’s a new team so it’s difficult to say (how we’ll do) because we haven’t kicked a ball, but we’d like to think we’d be there and there abouts and going into every game trying to win as many games as possible.”
Looking ahead to the opening game, Levett added: “I’ve watched them play once so I know a little bit about them, the way they play, their shape and the players that they’ve got, so we know a little bit about them.
“Obviously it was only pre-season for them as well so it’s very difficult to know exactly how they’re going to play in the first game of the season, but we have an idea.”
Levett has fought off fierce competition from Ryman Premier League neighbours Cray Wanderers to land goalkeeper Simon Overland - the giant Maidstone based stopper played Blue Square Premier football for Hayes & Yeading last season.
“He’s a good keeper, very solid, so that’s a good addition to our squad,” said the boss.
“Michael Cook and Toby Webb have remained from last year, along with Joe Creasey, but we’ve got a couple of new signings as well, who have come in. We’ve got Tom Brown, I think he was at Bearsted last year or somewhere there, so he’s come in and joined us.
“We’ve got a couple of young lads from the Academy at Welling, who will hopefully feature at some stage for their development. A boy called Chris Davis, so yes, we’ll see how we go in terms with the young lads.
“We’re trying to blend in the young lads and some older heads and that’s the way it’s shaping up. Whether we start the campaign and we see we need a few older ones we’ll tinker around as we go.”
When asked how the Welling United Academy will benefit the Kent League club, Levett explained: “The idea is to give the players some senior experience so that will be good for them and their development and it’s just a question of doing the right things by the players.
“We’ll bring them along slowly so the ones we think are ready to step up to a senior level they’ve got that opportunity (with Sevenoaks) so that’s good for them.”
