We're going to enjoy our last nine games, says Ramsgate boss Jim Ward

RAMSGATE boss Jim Ward says he is allowing his players’ to have a night off training tonight to enable his walking wounded receive treatment ahead of Saturday’s trip to Merstham, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Rams came away from Faversham Town with a 2-0 win on Tuesday, courtesy of goals from former Ashford Town pair Mark Lovell and Mitchell Sherwood, to be the first Kent side to beat the Lilywhites in their debut Ryman League Division One South season.

Ward’s side have now climbed up to ninth place in the table, with 49 points from 35 games, but the Scot has wiped out his side’s chances of clawing back the five points they need to clinch a play-off place at the end of the season.

“Not a chance of the play-off’s,” insisted Ward, following the win at Salters Lane.

“We’re so thin on the ground that I’ve had to cancel training Thursday night – there’s a few of them coming in for treatment – but I’m frightened as I don’t want anyone else getting hurt.

“I’ve got seven on the treatment table who are really struggling, and there’s was a couple out at Faversham.

“The lad Curtis Winnett, who got elbowed in the nose got accidentally caught in the mouth, as well as a kick on his knee, and he doesn’t usually play, and now I’ve got him pleading with me not to pick him as he said, “I’m not going through that every week!”

Ward has put pressure off his side, saying, “We’ve got nine games left and we’re just going to enjoy it now.

“Listen, we’ve kept four clean sheets in our last five games so we must be doing something right.”
