We're going to Welling to cause an upset, insists Warrilow

Thursday 19th November 2009
TONBRIDGE ANGELS’ boss Tommy Warrilow is relishing the chance to take his Ryman Premier League form side to face Kent rivals Welling United in the FA Carlsberg Trophy this weekend, writes Mike Green.

The game, to be played at Park View Road on Sunday (2pm) gives the Angels the chance to prove their managers belief that Tonbridge should be playing in Blue Square South this season.

"I can’t call Sunday either a test or a distraction" Warrilow admitted to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after his side’s midweek win over Hendon.

"We're going there on Sunday to cause an upset - and it'll be an upset only because we're playing a league lower than they are despite the great season we had last year, and the Play Off defeat (against Carshalton Athletic) that still smarts.

“I don't think that there'll be too much between the two sides on the day if I'm honest!

“We're playing a side at a level where I do genuinely believe that we should be playing every week.  After missing out last year, we're getting things right on the pitch and can still have a good crack at this league."

He added: "After all a run in the league now can propel you up the table, just look at Hastings - they've won five or six on the spin and all of a sudden they're second with only Dartford ahead of them!

“If we are to compete, there are still a few issues off the pitch that need to be addressed so that we can match our own very high expectations - you can rest assured that we will do everything we can to get were we missed out on last season!"

When asked about the appointment of Jamie Day as Wings boss, Warrilow was full of praise for the rookie boss.

He said: "They had a great result against Staines last weekend, and it looks from the outside as though the new bossman has got something going.  To be fair to Jamie, I don't know him, but I do feel that it’s refreshing for a club to appoint a completely fresh face and give someone new to managership their first break.  I wish him well, but from Monday morning!"

Warrilow will go into the game without the "Trophy tied" Liam Harwood, although Warrilow is hoping that Jon Heath will be fit enough to play some part.

Defender Scott Gooding, meanwhile, was seen by a specialist on Wednesday to assess the state of the injury that has sidelined the defender now for nearly three months!

Meanwhile, Welling United confirmed yesterday that player-coach Lee Protheroe has been released by the club.

Defender Protheroe had taken the reigns following Andy Ford’s departure and took charge of the games against Chelmsford City, Havant & Waterlooville, Lewes and Worcester City.

A club statement issued by the club said, “We wish to thank Lee for his services as a player and more recently as coach and caretaker manager.

“Any club offering Lee a playing position would be gaining an experienced defender who showed professionalism to each of his roles with the club.

“We hope that he succeeds in finding a suitable club as a player and then in a managerial role in the future.

“He departs with our best wishes.”
