We're good enough to get into the play-off's, says Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he wants his side to bounce back over a big Easter programme - following their disappointing defeat at lowly Lewes last weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings arrived at The Dripping Pan on the back of five successive wins but came unstuck as they were defeated 3-1 by a side that went into the game sitting in the bottom three in the Blue Square South table and without a league win in ten.

As a result, Welling slipped down to sixth-place in the table, and their next two opponents are clubs that are currently occupying the play-off places.

Day takes his side to fifth-placed Braintree Town on Good Friday, before welcoming Dover Athletic to Park View Road on Easter Monday.
Andy Hessenthaler’s side are presently in third-place in the table and arrive on the back of a convincing 4-1 win at struggling Hampton & Richmond Borough in midweek.

“Obviously the Lewes result has made the (two games over Easter) a little bit bigger,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“We’ve got a good enough squad and a good enough team to go to Braintree and get a result Friday and Bank Holiday Monday at home, so I think there games that we’ve got to look forward to.

Former Dartford midfield flair player Day, meanwhile, has taken the Wings away from the relegation zone into a chance of reaching the play-off’s since taking over the hot seat at Park View Road last November.

“I think the boys have done really well,” said Day. “We weren’t happy with the way we lost at Lewes but before that they’ve been first-class.

“They’ve got themselves from a lower league position up towards the play-off places so it’s all credit to them.

“I think the squad at the minute is possibly good enough to get into the play-off’s.  It’s just whether we can maintain our form now from Friday until the end of the season.

“I think whatever team will have the most consistency will creep into the play-offs and keep their place.”

Day has revealed that he has already spoken to players with next season in mind.

“We’ve spoken to a few players at the club about next year and we’ve targeted a few players for next season, which wee think will add to our squad,” he added.

“We’ve started preparing a little bit, we obviously want to get this season out of the way first and see where that takes us.”
