We're not going to sit back at home - we're going out to win it, vows Wings boss Jamie Day

Monday 13th December 2010
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says his side will take the game to Luton Town during Tuesday night’s lucrative FA Carlsberg Trophy First Round Replay, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings rode their luck during Sunday’s battling goal-less draw at Kenilworth Road - but Day’s men will be more attack minded at Park View Road for the replay.

Day and Joe Healy served their one-match bans at Luton and will be unleashed against the full-time Hatters, riding high in third place in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

“These are the games you want to play in and be apart of,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his side’s heroic performance on Sunday.

With, on-paper, an easier tie at home to Zamaretto League Division One Central side Uxbridge awaiting the winners in the next round on 15 January, Day knows how important it is to progress.

“We’ll have a go again, we want to get through to the next round.  The big game or the so-called big game was on Sunday.  Now we’ve got them back to our ground we’ve got to go out there and hopefully try and win the tie at home.

“We’re not going to sit back at home.  We’re not going to play for a draw so we might change it tactically and personnel and try and win it.”

The Wings were disappointed that only 1,639 turned up at Kenilworth Road on Sunday, and Day urges Welling fans to give his side passionate support to see them through.

He said: “We spoke before hand, we wrote on the board that we owe them (our fans) one something as well because if it weren’t for them the club wouldn’t be here and today they were first class again.

“Every away game they’re decent, probably need the same vocal support at home.  I think that will help us out as well.”

Club owner Barrie Hobbins, meanwhile, is looking forward to a much welcomed cash boost on Tuesday night - a day before the club attend The High Court to pay-off their overdue tax bill, which was raised by supporters through loans, donations and advanced season ticket sales.

“The HMRC debt has been cleared in its entirety as far as the winding-up petition goes and I imagine that will be an automatic dismissal on Wednesday but it’s ongoing situation that matters as much.

“Having only four games in a fourteen week period I think it’s fair to say, weather permitting, we’ve got local derbies coming up over Christmas and we haven’t had that kind of income since the start of the season.

“It looks a bit more favourable but we’ve still got some work to do.  We mustn’t neglect  the situation for the future because we don’t want to be in this situation again.”

When asked about the club’s future, Mr Hobbins insisted spending beyond the club’s means will come to an end.

“Welling United Football Club will initially have to stabilise,” he said.  “Once it’s stabilise we want to be playing at the level we’re at - God forbid if we did get relegated for any reason

“We have to be careful.  We can’t spend more than what we’ve got coming in. We’ve all let our hearts rule our heads at various times and I will take the brunt of that.

“You do what’s right for supporters, sometimes, of course it works out in the long term to be wrong so that’s where we are at the moment.

“I’m sure the club has a very good future and a loyal fan base, which means more than anything.”
Club officials are putting in the finishing touches to prepare for the visit of The FA Carlsberg Trophy favourites.

There will be segregation in place and Luton fans will be given the left side of Park View Road (the Erith & Belvedere FC/Cricket ground side) and will need to use this entrance.  Wings fans will use the main turnstiles as usual.

Mr Hobbins said: “I hadn’t planned for a replay, I’ve got to be truthful.  We’ll make the most of the 48 hours to get it ready and I couldn’t put a figure on the crowd but hopefully it would be four-figures anyway.

The owner urges fans to give Day’s men excellent support to earn the club a further £5,000 in FA prize money with a historic giant-killing.

“I’d imagine the FA Trophy is not Luton’s priority but I’d dare say that, they still want to win the game as it’s still Wembley at the end of the road,” said Mr Hobbins.

“I’m just pleased we’ve got a chance again on Tuesday, in front of our own supporters, and we’re not out of the Cup yet.

“Our fans have been amazing in the last three months.

“A win on Tuesday night? It’ll be nice!  It will be a nice Christmas present!”

Admission prices for this game have been confirmed at £11 (adults), £6 (concessions), £3 (under 12).  Seating is £1 extra.  Season tickets are NOT valid for this game.
