We're only just getting back on course after a difficult time, says Whitstable chairman Joe Brownett

Monday 05th March 2012
WHITSTABLE TOWN chairman Joe Brownett has praised manager Justin Luchford and his players for pulling the struggling club away from the relegation zone.

Despite sitting in the bottom three in the Ryman League Division One South table, with 27 points from 30 games, back-to-back wins have put them eleven points clear of basement side Whyteleafe, who occupy the sole relegation spot.

They bounced back from an embarrassing 5-0 home defeat to promotion chasing Whitehawk to inflict Worthing’s first home defeat of the season – with a 2-1 win – and then they defeated Chipstead 3-2 at the weekend.

The club were awarded the Macron Team Performance of the Month by the Ryman League following their win at Woodside Road.

“Congratulations to the whole club on being awarded Team Award for February,” chairman Mr Brownett told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.

“Justin and Richard (Langley) and their coaches and players turned in the performance of the month to defeat Worthing.

“This was well deserved, especially as the club is only just getting back on course after a difficult time.

“Saturday’s game against Chipstead proved the club is on the move and the supporters were superb – plenty of singing and banter encouraged the players’ on to victory.”

Vice-chairman and club secretary, Gary Johnson, meanwhile, described that the “sterling performance at Worthing,” was “illustrating team spirit, attitude and passion from the Oyster Boys.”

He added:  “Fantastic news and a great achievement!”

Whitstable Town welcome Godalming Town to Belmont Road on Tuesday night and Mr Brownett calls on more supporters to attend games.

The Surrey side arrive in Kent sitting in seventh-place in the table, with 48 points from 29 games and are seven points adrift of fifth-placed side Folkestone Invicta, who welcome Walton Casuals to Cheriton Road on Wednesday night and fellow play-off chasers Dulwich Hamlet next Saturday.

He said: “This game should be a cracker and I ask for your support to take us up the table.”
