We're on the look out for new players all the time, says Ramsgate boss Jim Ward

RAMSGATE boss Jim Ward says he is constantly on the look out for new players to strengthen his squad as he searches for more consistency from his young side, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Rams suffered at the hands of much-improved side Burgess Hill Town at the weekend, losing 3-1 at Southwood Stadium, and are presently a disappointing 14th place in the Ryman League Division One South table with 7 points from as many games.
“It’s nothing to do with confidence, it’s consistency,” Bemoned Ward, when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his side’s fourth league defeat of the season.
“To be fair, Burgess Hill were the best team we’ve played all season. They were a big, strong side, good all over. Obviously a few bob have been spent down there so we just need to be a bit more consistent.
“The two games before we were excellent but that’s what happens when you’ve got a young squad.
“Burgess Hill have got a really good centre forward, the boy (Steve) Harper and the big lump that plays at the back, whose six foot six, they are a big side.
“We had our chances but we didn’t score at the right time. I’m a bit disappointed but we move on.”
Ward added: “Ben Laslett was a big miss on Saturday. Ben doesn’t miss too many games but he was away at his brothers wedding so he’s back Saturday.”
The Rams are staging an in-house friendly between the first team and reserve side on Tuesday night as Ward runs his eyes over some trialists.
“We’re having a game tomorrow night against our reserves, trying to get a bit more into the boys,” explained the Scot.
“Everything’s fine but we’re so close to being a decent side but we have to find that little bit extra. The last two games we were excellent, big scalps against Whyteleafe (5-0) and Chatham (2-0), who were doing well at the time but we’ve come up against one of the top teams in the league but 3-1 flattered them, but they’re a good side.”
When asked what he is searching for, Ward replied, “Anything that strengthens my squad! We’re on the look out all the time, always looking to trying to improve, whether it’s a local player or the Sunday morning players - can we bring them through our ranks like we’ve done over the years but we’re always looking, that’s why we’ve got this game on Tuesday night. We’ve got a few trialists playing in that.”
Gary Abbott brings his sixth-placed Sittingbourne side to Southwood Stadium in an re-arranged league game on Saturday.
“Gary’s got them playing again, they were quite strong against us. We have to be on our mettle. If we play to our full potential we should win the game,” said Ward.
“There’s loads of Kent derbies isn’t there - it’s like playing in the Kent League!
“You don’t want to get beat by any local side so there’s always that added edge to it.”
When asked if he feels his side can start rising up the table, Ward added, “It’s early doors! Why not? We can go on a good run, we’ve won two of our last three games and if we can keep doing that we’ll get close to the play-off’s.”
