We're sitting in a nice position, says Dover boss Martin Hayes

DOVER ATHLETIC boss Martin Hayes says he has a full squad available to him for Saturday’s crunch game against Farnborough, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Whites go into the Crabble clash in third place in the Blue Square Bet South table, with a record of five wins and two draws from eight games - Farnborough arrive in Kent sitting in eleventh place with three wins and two draws.

“I’d like to see it going really well for us, go and play brilliant and for us to win 3-0, that’s what I would like to see happen, but I would expect it to be a little bit harder than that!” Hayes told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“To be fair, I fully expect a really tough game. I know their manager (Steve King), I know what he was like and the players he had when they won the league at Lewes.  He’s got a few of those players back in their squad.  They will be big, strong and experienced and we will have our work cut out.

“We have to be patient and hopefully take our chances, like what we’re doing away.”

Hayes admitted his side perform better on their travels, saying, “We need the fans to keep behind us and generate an atmosphere and make it harder for sides to come to us.

“The results have been better away from home.  We’ve not done terrible at home, we’ve been a little bit flat and we’ve not been as clinical with our chances at home.

“Good sides have come to us - we’ve not played any bad sides - with a game plan to frustrate us and make it difficult and we have to deal with that.

“It’s been a frustrating time but it’s going to change soon.  We are playing well, we’re doing a lot of things right and I’m sure once we get a win or two everything will be back on track.”

Dover Athletic are five points adrift of league leaders Bromley - who travel to Dartford on Saturday - but Hayes insisted that it’s still early days to be talking about league positions.

He said: “You speak to any manager at the start of the season, that’s where you’d be in eight games, you’d bite their fingers off.

“Bromley have done exceptionally well so far, no-one’s been bad.  They’ve been far better in their wildest dreams, it’s a fabulous start.

“We’re doing lots right.  We’re sitting in a nice position.  You don’t win any prizes or rewards after eight games - it’s where you’re sitting in the last six or seven.

“We just have to keep ourselves in the pack and give ourselves a decent chance with the run in.  It’s certainly early days.  I’m happy with the way we’ve started, with a few improvements to make so it can’t be that bad if we’re sitting third.”

When asked about his squad, Hayes replied, “I’ve got everybody fit and back available.  I’ve got 18 to choose from and I have to pick the right combination to start with and pick the right subs and unfortunately there will be two or three sitting in the stands that could well have been playing.

“I’ve got a full house of everybody, no injuries or suspensions.

“It’s keeping everybody happy but at the moment the side’s playing well and getting results.  The other lads have got to be patient.  I’m sure their time will come and then they will grab their chance with both hands.”
