We're still finding our feet in the Ryman League, admits Lilywhites boss Justin Luchford

Thursday 23rd September 2010
FAVERSHAM TOWN’S adventure in Ryman One South continues this weekend as Justin Luchford takes his side to Fetcham Grove to face a Leatherhead side who have made a great start to the season, and will surely prove the biggest test for Luchford’s new boys so far, writes Mike Green.

Following what at least appears to be an indifferent start to the new season, the Faversham boss is under no illusions over the tasks that face his side in their new league.

Indeed after Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Dulwich Hamlet, the manager spoke to www.kentishfootball.co.uk about the tasks ahead over the coming months.

He said: “I know that every team in this league will have a good run and a poor one.  Met Police may win six or seven on the bounce but there isn’t a team in the league who won’t have a lull at some point.

“I’m just hoping that this is ours as we’re still finding our feet and once we get a win we can put a couple together back to back because we’ve already seen in the league that if you win two you fly up the league.  Win three or four and you’re in a play off place!  And that’s what makes me even more disappointed that we didn’t get at least a point from Tuesday.”

Luchford then admitted that as well as his playing facing the step up from Kent League, the manager himself was beginning to feel the difference.

“You set yourself up to do something as a manager and you have a game plan,” he admitted.

“Problem is with us at the moment is that we’re giving sides the chance to beat us – Saturday we gave Worthing two goals and we were simply awful for 45 minutes.  Again Tuesday night we’ve done the same – they’ve not done it – they’re not playing this excellent football that means we’re getting destroyed, and that’s the frustrating thing!

“We’re playing against sides that have played at this level for a long, long time and its just so unpredictable.  You really don’t know what you’re going to get or face.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to face Leatherhead, Luchford was clear what was about to face his side.

“The weekend won’t be easy for us either especially as they’re in the top three and flying!” he said.

“I said to the boys after Tuesday that they’ll look at the result but not see the performance and they’ll hopefully think that “we’ll beat them; they’ve come up from the Kent League and are going through a bit of a lull” and we if that’s the case we might just give them a shock.

“If we play like that we’ll give anyone a game without a shadow of a doubt.

“We’re still trying to bring a few players in and if we can get them and make the changes that we know we will make all of a sudden we look a pretty decent side.

“I’m not despondent about us because we’re not doing a lot wrong.  Apart from 45 minutes against Fleet and 45 minutes last Saturday we have not done a lot wrong but we’ve been punished for our mistakes.”

Given that its been the clubs first month of playing at this level, some would think that the manager would be reasonably satisfied with his new sides mid table start, but the Faversham boss had this to say when he was quizzed on the subject.

He said: “We’re better than our position at the moment – don’t get me wrong, I didn’t come into this league thinking that we’re going to win it as I’ve seen a lot of Ryman football over the years and I know my players, and when we do get on a run – and it will happen because its just a fact of football; we’ll probably play awful for five games and win the lot – but I should be talking ahead of this weekend with the Whyteleafe game and Tuesday with six more points than we’ve got which will mean that we’d be top eight.  I did expect more than we’ve achieved so far.”
