We still have a chance to resurrect our season, says Warrilow
Angels boss Tommy Warrilow has been talking with www.kentishfootball.co.uk ahead of the game and he admitted that, “This Saturday is a big game for us, but then again so was last Saturday against Carshalton – I think they all are now!”
He went on, “The League still very, very tight and if I’m honest I think Saturday was the worst we’ve played for quite a while but I’m not going to apologise for winning a game playing badly as we’ve deserved more form other games from playing well and haven’t got anything!
“I’ve told the lads, however, that we’ve got to be honest with ourselves and that it wasn’t good enough and on another day we wouldn’t get away with it.
“It was a good three points and with a couple more wins it’ll make it even more interesting – from here on in all our games will be big games – Saturday is, Tuesday night at Margate will undoubtedly be as will the games that come after that.
“The League is so tight and anyone who can put their finger on why wouldn’t be managing in this league – they’d be at a lot higher level! The results have been just plain daft – you come off the pitch and look at the other scores and when you lose everyone else seems to lose or draw, and when you win they win. And that’s why if anyone can win four or five games (like Boreham Wood have) you’ll just fly up the league. And that’s the lesson we’ve got to take for the rest of the season – win Saturday; go again Tuesday; win Tuesday; go again Saturday and so on fort he rest of the season!”
With Warrilow’s number two Cliff Cant having watched Saturday’s visitors on Thursday night (when they were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Wealdstone after losing to Ian Jenkins’ Cray Wanderers last weekend), Warrilow admitted that he hopes that the Angles have done their homework fort his important fixture.
He said: “We’re taking nothing to chance about Kingstonian – lets face people said that Dartford’s bubble had burst before they beat us 4-1 at our place a couple of weeks ago.
“But, you know what the most annoying thing is – on our day we all know just how good we can be and the plain truth of it all is that we should have won more games than we have.
“The amount of opportunities that we’ve thrown away this season - even the other nights against Cray – we seemed determined to make it hard for ourselves and that’s a bad habit to have at this stage of the season and that’s what’s caused our problem.
“We keep letting some really poor goals in which doesn’t help, and the second half of the season we’ve addressed that to a degree but we have also needed the rub of the green too – but we just haven’t had it.
“Just ask any player, director, or supporter there have been times this season when we haven’t had any luck whatsoever – I know that all managers say the same, but as far as I’m concerned it’s the truth.”
If the Angels needed any demonstration as to how a season could be turned around they only have to look in the opposite dressing at Longmead Saturday afternoon.
“Look how Kingstonian started the season – they were being beaten by everyone and now they’ve recovered and are right up there!” Warrilow conceded, but added, “That’s exactly what we’ve got to do. “We haven’t started our second half of the season yet but the real bonus is that if we can put any sort of run together we could still be in contention – “all” we got to do is put more chances away, tighten up at the back and start to really believe in ourselves – and yes I do believe that we still have a chance to resurrect our season, as whatever eleven I put out I have the faith in them that they are good enough to win a game of Ryman Premier League football.
“And that’s what we’re continually trying to install into the boys – OK we haven’t had the best of times lately, but we’ve being playing all right – we just haven’t been getting what we deserve out of some games. But that has been our own fault though – the boys have just got to start believing again.”
The Longmead faithful have largely stayed loyal behind their side a fact that the manager appreciates. “Its been a frustrating season for our supporters who have stood by us, as we’ve been unlucky with some results,” Warrilow said, “but even our critics will tell you that there have been some games that we don’t deserve to have lost yet we have and we’ve come away with nothing.
“Obviously there have been issues off the pitch with is having to let players go etc, which doesn’t help and the players we’ve got in have effectively been thrown in at the deep end.
“But as long as the lads who pull on the Tonbridge shirt give there all, I just hope that the crowd will get fully behind them and we can get the results that we need.”
Looking at his team sheet for the weekend, Warrilow’s squad looks stretched once more.
He said: “As the game the other night was called off, Kirk Watts misses out Saturday as his suspension hasn’t finished (he should be back I think for Tuesday’s trip to Margate) and we’ve got the long term boys still missing – Scott Gooding, Tom Bryant – whilst I’m waiting on Meshach Nugent to see if he’s shaken off a knock he got early on last Saturday.
“I’m delighted to have got him in as I know that Billericay made enquiries as did Welling, but he signed for us – there’s a few clubs that wanted him, but he came to Longmead which even after the season we’ve had still shows me that we can attract players and I’m looking forward to working with him!”
www.kentishfootball.co.uk will be covering this game, with Mike Green reporting.
