West Kent pair pay tribute to football Legend

Tonbridge Angels chairman Nick Sullivan today paid tribute to George Piper, who sadly passed away last night, aged 100, writes Stephen McCartney.

Mr Piper passed away at around ten o’clock last night at the Kent & Sussex Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, after being taken to hospital following a fall before Christmas.

Mr Piper reached his century last October and the two club’s close to his heart, Tonbridge Angels and Tunbridge Wells, held celebrations at Wells’ Culverden Stadium home.

“It’s a sad day for local football really because he gave a lot to local clubs,” Mr Sullivan told www.kentishfootball.co.uk today.

“We will be holding a minute’s silence and wearing black armbands during Saturday’s home game against East Thurrock United.

“It’s just a very sad day. A sad occasion for local sport as George gave so much to local football

“He had great affection for both Tonbridge Angels and Tunbridge Wells and was a regular visitor to both clubs and he will be sadly missed by everyone.”

Tunbridge Wells’ secretary, Barry Whitlock, issued the following statement on behalf of everyone at the Kent League club.

He added:  “Obviously it’s a sad loss for football as a whole. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Tunbridge Wells.

“We were pleased to take part in his century celebrations recently.”

Back on the pitch, the Angels welcome East Thurrock United to the Betterview Longmead Stadium on Saturday in the Ryman Premier League, whilst Tunbridge Wells travel to unbeaten Kent League leaders Whitstable Town, who play at Belmont Road.  Both games start at 3pm.
