We've got players who can perform on the big stage, says Warrilow
But for Tonbridge Angels boss Tommy Warrilow, Saturday's FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie against West Kent neighbours Bromley, presents the chance not only for the Ryman Premier League side to progress as far as they ever have in the competition (remember it was the "old" Tonbridge FC who played in the First Round proper, and not the Angels) and claim a Blue Square South scalp to boot, more importantly it will mean much needed funds for the managers promotion push.
"It’s a big game for us of course," Warrilow told www.kentishfootball.co.uk, "not just because of the FA Cup but also because of the money involved. The extra revenue that the game will give the club (though the gate and in the bar is great) but to be in that draw on Monday morning will mean so much to the club.
“We know that Bromley are from the League above - a league that I still believe we should be playing in this season. We're not though and we all know why, which makes Saturday such a big test for us.
“We've got players who can and probably should be playing at level, and Saturday gives them the chance almost to prove it, and I honestly think we can win it - whether we do or not is another question!"
Even after last weekend’s 5-3 defeat against Tooting & Mitcham - a game which the Angels boss was told that Bromley were having watched, Warrilow was still optimistic.
He continued, "We had a hiccup at Tooting on Saturday, but coming back the way we did to get level at 3-3 was good. They broke well in numbers, and in the end that hurt us. I lost count of how many second balls we lost or gave away.
“Bromley will have seen us concede five but we also scored three against one of our bogey sides (last season at Tooting the home side scored in 89 and 90 minutes to deny Warrilows side, and the corresponding game at Longmead the manager describes as the worst since he’s been in charge of the Angels) - on our day we're a match for anyone, as I expect they are too.
“We've watched them, and we know a few of their players, but the thing with Non League football is that you can be Man of the Match one week and anonimous the following. We've a young squad and I just hope that they can perform on such a potentially big stage."
Historically things point against a home win on Saturday as Bromley have beaten Tonbridge on their last SIX meetings, but as Warrilow himself was quick to point out "We must be due to beat them then - the law of averages say that we're due a win then doesn’t it?
“The last time we played them (two seasons ago in the Kent Cup - Bromley won 4-2 at Hayes Lane) they were clinical in their finishing and we were outclassed.
“We know they were wounded when they lost at the weekend (4-0 at Maidenhead in Blue Square South), but looking at our respective records they are very similar, and our form is very close too."
With Tonbridge conceding five last time out and Bromley four, should goals be expected at Longmead on Saturday?
"Looking at the weekend you'd say yes it was guaranteed wouldn’t you," smiled the Angels boss "tell you what though, I'll take a 1-0 now if you offer it to me!!!"
To see if Warrilow gets his wish, join www.kentishfootball.co.uk at this and all the other three Third qualifying Round ties on Saturday. Mike Green will be there for us, and he'll also be covering the game for BBC Radio Kent's Saturday Sport show.
