We've got to be up for the battle, says Lane

Friday 09th April 2010
WHITSTABLE TOWN threw themselves a Ryman League Division One South survival lifeline when they upset the formbook by winning 3-2 at Bourne Park against Play Off chasing Sittingbourne on Tuesday night, writes Mike Green.

But if caretaker manager Mark Lane and his Oystermen are to continue to defy the odds, and the drop, their next test doesn’t come much tougher – second placed Folkestone Invicta head to Belmont Road this Saturday themselves looking to get back level with title favourites Croydon Athletic.

It doesn’t get any easier for Lane’s side either in their fight at the bottom as after they have faced Neil Cugley’s Folkestone Invicta at the weekend, next up for the Oystermen are play-off chasing Worthing, but Lane isn’t put off.

He simply smiled and told www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “Does get much tougher does it?” he asked. We’ve got those two and then we go to Ashford and Corinthian next week – it goes on and as long as the other teams around us aren’t picking up too many points we’ve got a chance and we’ve got to try and keep winning games and nick points here there and everywhere.

“To be fair Neil Cugley has done a great job down there. They’re hardly conceding goals and they seem to be nicking them left right and centre. They’re grinding out their results – the 2-0s; the 1-0s – and that’s always in my book the sign of a good side.

“It’s a real tough game for us and we have to be up for it. They’ve got some of the best experienced players in the League and so we’ll have to be at our best to get anything out of the game – we’ve got to be up for the battle again especially as now we’ve got a cushion albeit of only three points between us and the bottom two.”
