We’ve got to get ourselves out of the relegation mire, says Munday

WHITSTABLE TOWN boss Mark Munday says his side must pull of a surprise result at high-flying Godalming Town on Saturday to make amends for their "diabolical" 3-0 midweek defeat at basement side Chipstead, writes Stephen McCartney.

Chipstead leapfrogged over both Ashford Town and Whitstable Town (leaving both Kent sides in the Ryman League Division One South relegation zone) as Whitstable put in a shockingly poor first half performance, which saw them suffer a crushing blow, going 3-0 down after just 36 minutes on what was an embarrassing night for the club.

Munday takes his battered troops to Godalming, a side that are currently in third place in the table, six points adrift of league leaders Folkestone Invicta.

"We need a positive reaction," Munday told www.kentishfootball.co.uk. "It’s not going to be any different personnel."

And speaking about the club’s current position, Munday added, "We’ve got to get ourselves out of it. If that means picking up points in places where we’re not expected to, that’s what we’ve got to do.

"People have got to learn, they’ve got to learn the hard way as well. If that means they don’t play football for a while then they don’t play football for a while, some of the performances (at Chipstead) were unacceptable!"

Munday pulled off Gareth Cornhill at the interval at High Road on Tuesday night and inspired his side as he pulled all the strings from the middle of the park.

Whitstable showed more desire during a dominant second half, but several decent saves from Chipstead goalkeeper James Wastell kept them at bay.

But the 38-year-old insists he wants his players to do their talking out on the pitch, starting at Godalming on Saturday.

"I try to keep myself out of the performances to be honest with you as I’m not going to be included a lot this year," said Munday.

"On that ranking, a 38-year-old can come on and just do the simple things. I haven’t trained and I’m not fit. Why can’t a 19-20 year-old?

"You have to ask questions about their desire on that respect, when you get a performance like that!"
