We've got to perform against our promotion rivals, says Ian Jenkins

CRAY WANDERERS boss Ian Jenkins says his side have to be “up for it” for the play-off contenders bash against Kingstonian at Hayes Lane tomorrow, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wands suffered their seventh league defeat of the season when they were deservedly beaten 2-1 at home to AFC Hornchurch last Sunday.

Cray didn’t recover from a poor first half performance as the Essex boys were deservedly 2-0 up before the versatile Tyrone Sterling pulled a goal back late on.

Kingstonian arrive at Hayes Lane sitting in second place in the Ryman Premier League table with 40 points from 22 games - six points behind arch-rivals Sutton United with a game in hand.

A victory for the Wands will see them join the Surrey giants on 40 points and with a home game against sixth-placed Lowestoft Town to follow next Tuesdaya and Sutton United’s arrival on 5 February, the Kent side have a big period coming up.

“In this league you’ve got to be up for it and if you’re not you will be punished,” said Jenkins.

“We’ve been on a good run, we just have to bounce back.”

Jenkins added: “We’re in a position that we’re happy with because we’re playing well this season and maybe we can push for a definite spit in the play-off’s - if not go up!

“People have to sit back and look at it realistically.  We’re a new team this year and if we don’t go up and if we keep this team next year we’ll be there or there abouts next year.

“I’m well happy where we are at this minute.  I can’t fault the players.  It was a one-off defeat (against Hornchurch), I’ve had a go at them in there but they have to look at themselves.  They are a better tam that they were last Sunday.”

Looking ahead to their big three games coming up, Jenkins said: “They’re all tough games in this league, anyone can beat anyone.

“You look at that if you get wins out of all those games you’ll definitely be amongst it but you’ve got to perform on the day.    If you’re not you’re not going to get anything out of those games as they’ll be up for it.

“Everyone’s looking for the same thing in the top 10, they want to get promoted, we’re all good enough to but it’s who comes out on top in the end.”
