We've got to pick ourselves up, says bitterly disappointed Yorath

MARGATE boss Terry Yorath says his side will not suffer a FA Cup hangover when they welcome Horsham to Hartsdown Park on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Thanet side were dumped out of the competition last night as Sutton United booked themselves a second qualifying round tie at home to lower league Uxbridge on Saturday week, winning the replay 3-2 after extra time.

Sutton United had taken a 22nd minute lead through Matt Mann - but Wayne Wilson’s curling 35-yard free-kick and Joe Healy sweet lob had given Yorath’s side a 2-1 lead after 53 minutes.

But despite withstanding wave after wave of Sutton attacks, Margate’s resilience was finally broken with 47:29 on the clock when Danny Phillips forced extra time in controversial circumstances.

The midfielder was allowed to roll the ball into the corner of the net, leaving Margate goalkeeper Paul Nicholls rooted to the spot, and Margate’s veteran midfielder, John Keister immediately picked up his second yellow card for allegedly swearing at referee Mr Tony Power - although Yorath insisted afterwards that the former Dover Athletic star didn’t - as Margate were punished for an unseen handball leading up to the last-gasp equaliser.

Sutton sealed the win inside the second period of extra time through former Welling United midfielder Sonny Cobbs.

All attention now turns to picking up all three points against Horsham to climb out of the Ryman Premier League drop zone.

“We’ve got to start picking some points up now both on the road and at home,” Yorath told www.kentishfootball.co.uk   following his side’s FA Cup exit last night.

“At home we’ve mostly got to win our games.”

But being knocked out of the competition was a bitter pill to swallow for the Welshman.

“They (my players) can’t get their heads around it really,” said Yorath.

“The game was grasped from our grasp if you like.  It’s unfortunate but there you are, we’re not in the next round.

“We’ve got to pick ourselves up before Saturday and go again.”
