We've had long enough in the Kent League, admits Foley

Sunday 18th January 2009

VCD ATHLETIC boss Paul Foley says no-one should rule out his side having a say in the Kent League title race this season, writes Stephen McCartney.

Vickers suffered an embarrassing defeat to lower league opponents, Marske United, in the fourth round of the FA Carlsberg Vase yesterday, going down 3-2 at Oakwood yesterday.

Despite a slow start by their standards, the Crayford based outfit are now in tenth place in the table on 22 points from 13 games - and with so many games in hand, Foley insists his side will start climbing up the table.

“The first thing I said in the dressing room is we put that away to one side for another year,” Foley told BBC Radio Kent yesterday.

“We need to lift ourselves up and we’re by no means are we out of the run in for the league and I’ve been saying that for a few weeks.

“It’s a strange season this year but if we can get another run that we’ve had, we’ve won eight in ten, another one of them, who knows, we’ll be right up there for sure.”

Foley added the club will do everything they can to claw back the 19 point head-start that they’ve given to Hythe Town, in their bid to seal promotion into the Ryman League.

“It’s something the club want now,” said Foley. “We’re set up well, the ground is a delight and the chairman’s very ambitious.

“We just want to get out of the (Kent) League. To be honest we’ve had long enough in it.

“We’ve finished second three times so I think it’s time to get out of it.”
