We were the better team by far, insists Yorath

MARGATE boss Terry Yorath rued his side’s poor start for their 1-0 home defeat to Horsham at the weekend.

The Blues slipped to second-from-bottom in the Ryman Premier League table, losing to an eighth minute winner from former player Reggie Savage.

“We got punished for starting the game off too slowly,” admitted Yorath, when speaking to www.margate-fc.com.

“Reggie Savage, who we had here during the season, he’s only about five feet six, five feet seven, he got a header, which tells you something.

“We paid for those first 15-20 minutes,” he added.

The Hornets were the first side to win at Hartsdown Park after Dover Athletic, the champions-elect, won there five games ago.

Yorath utilised Liam Harwood’s strength, using him as an emergency forward, rather than his usual central defensive role, in the final fifteen minutes, as former Bromley and Sittingbourne defender Jack Haverson came off the bench for attacker Kenny Pratt.

“I thought we were very unlucky today,” said Harwood, when speaking to www.margate-fc.com.

“Pat (Mullin) was saying, he had one shot to save, and that was a bobbling shot and I think we should definitely got at least a point out of the game today.”

The blonde haired Harwood added, “We should have done better in the final third, and in the first ten minutes should have come out a bit sharper.”

Harwood, who enjoyed playing in his new role, added, “Caused them some problems but, to be fair to them, they done well at the back.

“I’m definitely gutted about not getting a point at least from this game. Today, it was just the final third, we couldn’t get it in the back of the net, which cost us today.”

Despite suffering their 19th league defeat of the season, which leaves them inside the drop zone, Yorath was able to take positives out from the game.

“We kept going for the full 90 minutes,” said the Welsh legend. “Young Jack (Haverson) came on with about 15 minutes to go at centre half and won every header, which was very good.

“I stuck Liam up front, I felt we needed a bit more beef. Really, all in all, they worked hard enough, we just didn’t create really, clear cut chances even though I thought we were the better team by far.”
