We will be doing our level best to progress up the table, insists Munday

WHITSTABLE TOWN boss Mark Munday has challenged his squad to string a good run of form together to climb out of the relegation zone, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen slumped to second-from-bottom in the Ryman League Division One South table after their trip to basement side Ashford Town was snowed off on Wednesday night, and Eastbourne Town defeated Walton Casuals by two goals to nil on the same night to climb out of the drop zone.

Whitstable welcome fourth-placed side Worthing to Belmont Road tomorrow, before play-off chasing Sittingbourne visit on Tuesday night.

Munday demands a reaction, having lost 7-1 away to Leatherhead in their last game, last weekend.

“Firstly, we need to be focused on the match against Worthing tomorrow,” Munday told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.

“If that does not go ahead then the same applies to the game against Sittingbourne next Tuesday.

“Despite the poor result at Leatherhead, which believe me was very disappointing and it’s one we will learn from, there were positives to come out of the game.

“Firstly, I was very pleased with Tom Parker who had a really solid game, and late on Gareth Cornhill reminded us all of what he can do. Not only scoring but also his overall work-rate was good.

“I was less pleased with other areas but they will be addressed and we shall look to the positives and get back to basics.”

Walton Casuals, Chipstead and Eastbourne Town are all within Whitstable’s grasp and Munday has the belief in his side that they can maintain their Ryman League status at the end of the season.

“I reminded the lads we have one of the leagues form teams, been on a good run of five or six games and that’s the sort of form we need to replicate again,” he said.

“I was disappointed that we did not play on Wednesday particularly as Eastbourne won, but a glance at the table will tell you we are not isolated at the bottom of the pile, there are plenty of points still to play for and we will be doing our level best to progress up the table.”
