We will be making some tough decisions over the next week, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day has made his first summer signing – but revealed the club has reduced its playing budget next season.

The Wings have signed highly-rated goalkeeper, Sam Mott, 23, from their Ryman League Division One North neighbours Thamesmead Town.

The two Kent clubs played two FA Carlsberg Trophy Third Qualifying Round ties last season and Day was impressed with the former Ebbsfleet United and Ramsgate stopper and has brought him to Park View Road.

Mott also had a trial with League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge at the beginning of this year.

“Sam is a good, young keeper which we are hoping we can progress further,” said Day, after completing the deal last night.

“He is a good size and has good handling, which he showed against us in the Trophy games and we look forward to working with him.”

Day, meanwhile, has yet confirmed his retained list, which has to be submitted to The Football Association by the end of the month.

He said: “With the budget being cut back from what we finished it with, we can no longer keep some of the players that finished the season so we will be making some tough decisions in the next week or so.”

Thamesmead Town manager, Keith McMahon, meanwhile, has acted quickly by bringing in goalkeeper Rob Budd from league rivals Ilford.

A club statement, which was published on www.thamesmeadtownfc.co.uk  said last night: “Rob was Ilford’s captain and scored a goal for him and his performances helped them to stay in the Ryman One North.

“Keith McMahon is delighted to secure Rob as he begins in earnest his squad building for next season.

“We wish Sam well after two great seasons with the Mead and we have secured a very capable replacement in Rob.”
