We will get back to winning ways, says Walker
MAIDSTONE UNITED joint-manager Alan Walker says he felt his side deserved to get more out of their last two games, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Stones were held to a 1-1 draw by Boreham Wood last weekend, and came within two minutes of earning a point at Staines Town in midweek, but two late goals gave Staines a 3-1 win.
Walker, who takes The Stones to Sutton United tomorrow, subject to an 11 o’clock pitch inspection, told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk that goalkeeper Steve Northwood apologised to his team-mates after his mistake cost a share of the points.
“When you look back over our last two games, I definitely do not think that we have got the results our performances have merited,” said Walker.
“We were disappointed with the draw against Boreham Wood because we had enough chances to win the game and against Staines we were desperately unlucky not to come away with a point after conceding two late goals.
“We put in a very spirited and competitive performance but we came undone when they scored late on.
“In the dressing room afterwards Steve Northwood apologised to the lads as he fell over his legs as he tried to peddle backwards when the cross came in that led to the goal.”
Looking ahead to their trip to Gander Green Lane tomorrow, Walker is confident his side will bounce back against a Sutton United side that are currently in the play-off’s.
“If we perform as well as we did on Tuesday night, I am sure we will make a return to winning ways,” he said.
“There have been signs in the last two games that our form is beginning to return and hopefully we will soon begin to pick up victories in the manner that we were doing so before Christmas.”
Walker confirmed defender Peter Hawkins’ loan spell from Blue Square Premier side Ebbsfleet United has been extended.
“It would have been Peter’s last game for us on Saturday, but I am pleased to say that he will be with us for at least another month and touch wood, we have no injury worries ahead of tomorrow’s game,” added Walker.
