Whitstable Town welcome continued success but must do so within its means, says chairman Gary Johnson
WHITSTABLE TOWN have unveiled Will Graham as the club’s new manager.
Graham stays at The Belmont after Jim and Danny Ward left the club to return to manage Ramsgate after only one season in charge.
The Scottish brothers guided Whitstable Town to eighth-place in the Ryman League Division One South, the club’s highest ever position.
The decision for the pair to leave left chairman Gary Johnson bitterly disappointed.
Mr Johnson issued a statement on the club’s website and said: “I and all at the club were and indeed still are hugely disappointed in the Ward’ departure and the way in which the worst kept secret in football manifested.
“The club has been extremely loyal to the management team and all the playing squad, something rarely seen in football; what we promised at the start of the season was delivered throughout to the final day.
“Given that I on behalf of the club briefly talked to every player individually after the final game, inviting each and every one back subject of course to the manager’s requirements, it is disappointing to learn via text, social media and other sources that a number have been lured away by the promise of the golden pound.
“What’s more, it has been reported by at least one player, is that some players have actually signed registration forms; how this can be the case when these have not (as yet) been available for next season is beyond me as does the comment made to me ‘you have to do what you do’ in terms of attracting and enticing players to move!
“All players from last season will of course be welcomed back, we had fun and a great camaraderie throughout; this was our second continuous record breaking season, the previous under Nicky Southall when we reached the last 32 of The FA Trophy whilst this year has seen our highest league position and points amassed a credit to all involved.
“It’s only natural that we therefore continue on the trajectory of success; all at the club would welcome the continuation of this and the feel good factor.
“Our fans both home & away have been a credit, our gates increased by 19% to an average of 211.
“As a result of this and the very nature of Whitstable Town FC a high number of expressions of interest in the managerial vacancy have been received without the club advertising the post.
“Will Graham, has been (and remains) in contact with each and every player since the announcement of the previous managers’ departure with the backing of myself and the club.
“Whitstable Town FC having consolidated their position since promotion to the Ryman League would welcome continued success, but must do so within its means.
“I would personally like to acknowledge the positive remarks and encouragement received from our fans and many associated at rival clubs, thank you.”
