Whitstable Town operate on a sound financial footing - Brownett
Thursday 02nd July 2009
WHITSTABLE TOWN will not spend money that they haven’t got, insists interim chairman Joe Brownett, writes Stephen McCartney.Mr Brownett is expected to be voted in as the club’s new chairman at a members only annual general meeting at Belmont Road on Monday, 13th July.
And he insists the club will do all they can to support new manager Mark Munday, ahead of their third Ryman League Division One South campaign.
“I’ve sponsored Whitstable for the last 20 years, I love the club,” Brownett, who takes over from Tony Rouse, told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
“I would never see it get into a financial mess. Our books show that I’ve been a benefactor for a long time, my aim this year as chairman, if that’s rectified in a week or so, is the fact that I want to see Mark Munday, whose obviously a new manager, given all the support the club can give him and that will come from me, the committee and everybody within the club.
“That does not mean giving him financial problems as far as his players are concerned.
“We’re only in a position to do what we’ve done in the past. We’re not issuing any new finance. We’re striving to get finance into the club and that’s what we’ll continue to do.
“But we’re not in the same position (unpaid tax bills) as other clubs find themselves at the moment and we’re very happy about that.”
The Oystermen reported back to pre-season training last night, and long-serving stalwart Mr Brownett says hopes will be high this coming season.
Whitstable Town, under previous manager Marc Seager, have bagged 50 points in both of their opening two campaign’s at this level.
“I think we’ve consolidated,” admitted Mr Brownett. “Looking at the players who came training last night, they look a good bunch of players and the prospects look very bright.
“I mean, it’s very early to say that if the players perform, I’m pretty sure we will do as well or even better than last year.”
Munday, who is a financial advisor and resides in near-by Margate, was keeping his cards close to his chest about the players that turned up last night.
“No player news as such,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk . “But a few trialists who look good in the attendance of around 45.”
The club, based at Belmont Road, are still searching for a new reserve team manager, following Glen Eason’s decision to quit at the end of last season.
“We’re still seeking a manager for the reserves,” revealed Mr Brownett. “We’ve got an exciting group of players and the only reason why Glen (stepped down was because) it was a long way to travel.
“If we can get someone more local that would be really excellent. I’m sure something will happen next week, but it’s still very early yet. We’ve still got 3-4 weeks, but they started training last night and it’s looking alright.”
