Whitstable trio cheat death in fatal Thanet Way crash

Sunday 13th December 2009
THREE Whitstable Town players cheated death as they witnesses to a fatal accident on the Thanet Way en-route to their game at Godalming Town on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Manager Mark Munday’s preparations for the Ryman League Division One South game were disrupted, as Dan Dolton, Stuart Vahid and Dan Wisker were questioned by Kent Police following the accident on the Thanet Way.

Tony Rouse, the club’s press officer, contacted www.kentishfootball.co.uk at around one o’clock yesterday afternoon, and said, “They haven’t made the ground as they’ve been involved in a fatal accident, now they’re not injured in any way shape or form.

“A woman in front of them swerved to miss a pheasant and ran off the road, turned the car over.  They actually had to swerve to miss her car.

“I don’t know which of them it was, they spent twenty minutes at the roadside giving the woman CPR and she’s died at the roadside, so they’ve been detained by the Police, which is quite normal in a death, obviously to give their statements and everything.”

Munday, 38, who played the entire second half during his side’s 3-0 defeat at Chipstead last Tuesday, was forced to play himself against a Godalming Town side in third place in the table, although he received deep bruising beneath his right eye following a challenge.

He had to draft in reserve players Dave Stubbs and Stephen Baines as he could only name a 13-man squad, which included unused substitute, goalkeeper coach, Mark Lane.

Sam Denly, playing in the middle of the park, and goalkeeper Kevin Fewell were once again in their influential mood, as an early goal from striker Dave Cory sealed a morale-boosting 1-0 win, which claws the club out of the relegation zone.

BBC Radio Kent , meanwhile, reported that a 19-year-old driver was killed and a passenger hurt in the crash.

Kent Police said the vehicle crashed on the A299 Thanet Way at about 11:15am on Saturday, and no other vehicle was involved.

The London-bound carriageway between the St Nicholas at Wade roundabout and Reculver was temporarily closed to let officers investigation the incident.

The force has asked anyone with information to contact them.

www.kentishfootball.co.uk would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the teenager.
