Wings boss Jamie Day relishing Arsenal visit

Friday 23rd July 2010
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he is looking forward to playing against Arsenal’s young guns at Park View Road tomorrow, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 30-year-old was a trainee at Highbury between 1997-99, but didn’t make any first team appearances for the Gunners, before he was sold to AFC Bournemouth for £20,000, where he made 32 appearances for the Dorset club.

“I’m really looking forward to the game, playing against decent young players.” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk  on the eve of the Park View Road warm-up.

“I loved my time there and made many friends, which I still speak to.

“I was not good enough to get in their first team but learned an awful lot which hopefully I can take into management.”

The Wings have played four pre-season friendlies so far, beating Herne Bay (3-1), but have lost to Charlton Athletic (0-1), Aveley (0-1) and Millwall (1-2).

And with only four warm-ups remaining, Day wants his players to build-up their fitness ahead of their Blue Square Bet South opener, against Hampton & Richmond Borough on 14 August.

Day said: “Players will start getting a little longer match time now.

“It will be very tough but a good workout for our boys, both for fitness and match sharpness.”

The midfield playmaker added: “I just hope there is a decent crowd there to watch.”

Admission prices have been confirmed as £11 (adults), £6 (concessions), with an extra £2 for seating.
