Wings player-manager Jamie Day tries to lift his tired troops
Sunday 29th August 2010
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he will do a head-count to see who is fit enough to play Lewes at Park View Road on Monday afternoon, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Wings four match unbeaten run came to a disappointing end away to Kent rivals Bromley yesterday, as they looked lethargic and out of ideas at Hayes Lane yesterday.
They only had Ben Billings’ 90th minute header (following a cross from fellow substitute Tommy Whitnell) to show as an eight-minute brace from striker Warren McBean kept Bromley at the top of the Blue Square Bet South table with a 100% record from their opening five games.
Day hopes the club’s transfer embargo is lifted soon, as he only had 14 fit players available to him against Mark Goldberg’s side and Jack Parkinson and Andy Sambrook both picked up knocks, but were forced to solider on.
“Hopefully it’s getting sorted out next week,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk. “We’ve got to deal with what we’ve got at the moment and hopefully we’ll have players available for Monday.
“I think Lee Clarke (fractured cheekbone) and Loick Pires (knee) are probably another week away, Clarkie maybe two weeks. Loui Fazakerley has got a badly bruised foot from Tuesday night, again I don’t think he’ll be available for Monday and Jack Parkinson and Andy Sambrook took a knock today. We’ve got four or five players carrying injuries. It’s just unfortunate.
“We’re not going to moan about it or using it as an excuse. We’ve got to get on with it and hopefully we can get players fit for next weekend.”
Day praised the vocal support that travelling Wings fans gave his “leggy” team at Hayes Lane.
“The support every game, home and away, there’s a hardcore of supporters who we can hear and it spurs the lads on,” he said.
“Unfortunately today we didn’t play particularly well but you can still hear them and I would like to thank them for their support and hopefully it will continue for the rest of the season.”
Looking ahead to the Lewes clash on Monday afternoon, Day said: “We only had 14 (players) today and three or four have taken knocks and I think as a fourteen we’ve got tiredness that is creeping in.
“I’ve said to the boys after the game today, everyone is tired but we’ve got to pick ourselves up and we’ve got to try and get a result on Monday.
“I do feel for them a little bit because they have worked really hard the last two weeks, but we’re in a situation we can’t change and we’ve got to get on with it.”
Day added: "We’ve got to get through Monday’s game, we’ve got to try and get a result on Monday with the players that we’ve got to dig in and then the league dies down a little bit then and hopefully we can get a few more players signed, give some players a rest that have thoroughly deserved it and hopefully we can kick on again."
