Winning on opening day is all that matters, says Welling boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he will swap all his side’s impressive results during pre-season for an opening day home win over Hampton & Richmond Borough, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings go into their new Blue Square Bet South campaign on an impressive run of five straight wins - they won six out of nine warm-up games -  but all that counts for nothing if Hampton & Richmond Borough come away from Park View Road with all three points on Saturday.

“We’ve had them watched already, so we know a bit about them,” Day told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“They’ll probably be strong, physical, direct and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for that.

“Pre-season’s fine and it’s fine winning games, but the first game of the season is when it really matters an that’s what we’re looking forward to.

“Hopefully we can continue what we’ve done so far into the league.”

The midfield playmaker added: “We want a good start and hopefully we can get that.  Again, if it doesn’t go to plan, I still feel that we’ve got a good enough squad to change that around and not to panic and I’m looking forward to the season.”

Welling then play their first of eight Kent derbies at Dover Athletic next Tuesday, before locking horns with Havant & Waterlooville (away, 21 August), Chelmsford City (home, 24 August) before their derby against Bromley on 28 August at Hayes Lane.

The Wings end the month with Lewes visiting Park View Road on August Bank Holiday Monday.

And Day warned: “I think the whole month’s going to be difficult If I’m honest but again we’ll see where we are and how good we are when we play against these teams in August.

“We’ve got Dover, Havant, Chelmsford, Bromley - if we can come away with some good results, then we’ll see what happens.”

Day will be without the services of midfielder Lee Clarke, who suffered a fractured cheekbone during their final friendly away to Chatham Town last weekend, and he will be out for up to six weeks.
