Wisker lives up to his billing

WHITSTABLE TOWN battled their way to a crucial 2-1 home win over fellow strugglers Crowborough Athletic yesterday, much to the delight of their manager Marc Seager, writes Stephen McCartney.

Seager, speaking before the game, dismissed this as a “six-pointer”, although both sides were hovering just above the Ryman League Division One South drop zone.

But the victory has seen the Kent club rise four places up the table with 13 points from 13 games - four points clear of the dreaded zone.

Crowborough, their first season at this level, took the lead through Gavin Gordon after 37 minutes and the east Sussex side should have extended their lead further.

But Seager’s side gradually upped their game, but were still someway off the flowing football they played in their last two games, until Ian Pulman’s 63rd minute equaliser, slotting past the visiting goalkeeper at the second attempt.

However, Dan Wisker’s solo winner, eleven minutes from time, his fourth goal in as many games, came after a great long ball out of defence from Rob Thomas.

Wisker, who Seager said before the game, “if he fulfilled his potential he could be the best player in the Ryman League,” raced into the Crows’ half, with two defenders in hot pursuit, and kept his never under pressure to slot the ball home.

“When I was clear I got a bit nervous, we had a few chances, but I kept my cool and waited until the keeper committed before sliding it past him,” Wisker told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.

For Seager, it was a welcomed three points, and they can now look forward to their trip to Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday night with confidence.

“Football is all about winning,” Seager said. “Sometimes; and this was one of those games you take all the points without playing at your best, others you play well but don’t get what you deserve.

“Our last season in the Kent League we ground out results, often not pretty to watch but three points nonetheless.

“Today was one of those days, at times we were second best but hung on in there took all three points and look forward to Dulwich on Tuesday night.”

Dulwich Hamlet are currently 12th in the table with four wins and three draws from 11 games, but were defeated 1-0 at Walton & Hersham today and are only two points clear of Whitstable.
