You never get an easy game against Cray, warns Angels boss Tommy Warrilow

Monday 20th September 2010
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow was delighted with the response from his players at the weekend - after a disappointing start to the season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Angels have struggled to live up to pre-season expectation with a string of poor results - but all that looks to be behind them as goals from Lee Browning (who was later stretchered off the pitch) and his former Dover Athletic team-mate Frannie Collin sealed a morale-booting 2-1 win at Cavney Island based outfit Concord Rangers at the weekend.

“We were disappointed about going out of the FA Cup,” Warrilow told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“The boys done well (at Concord Rangers)- it’s a difficult place to go over to, it’s a very tight pitch.”

Reflecting on their league position, having secured two wins and a draw already in what has been a disappointing start, the Angels boss said: “I’m not too bothered about that at the moment, because it’s so tight.  If you can go on a back-to-back win it pushes you near the play-off’s again, but it’s so early in the season and I’m not even contemplating about relegation or play-off spots.”

Cray Wanderers arrive at Longmead Stadium on Tuesday night, just one place behind their Kent rivals with one win and three draws from their six league outings, so there’s all to play for.

“We’re all in that little pocket there,” said Warrilow.  “They got a good draw against Canvey on Saturday.  I saw them the other night and they’re a decent set-up.

“Jenko and Joe (manager Ian Jenkins and his assistant Joe Francis) have done really well and they’ve learnt a lot from their first year and they’ve strengthened their squad accordingly.

“You never get an easy game anyway against Cray and tomorrow isn’t any different.”

The Wands have the Ryman Premier League leading goalscorer in their ranks - Frenchman Laurent Hamici has already scored eight goals this season and the Bromley based side go into the Kent derby on a five game unbeaten run.

“Well, hopefully we’ll stop the animation up to him.  He’s banging in a few goals, again it’s very early to see whose top, middle or bottom in the goalscoring charts.  Obviously he’s a threat but so are we with Frannie Collin up front,” said Warrilow.

The Longmead faithful expect to see their side rise up the league table.

Warrilow said: “I think the league will be like it was last year.  When you come off the pitch Saturday the bottom teams beat the top teams and that’s the way it’s always been.

“We’ve got a ten day rest after tomorrow after going out of the FA Cup so it gives the squad time to get rid of the knocks and niggles.  It will be nice to go into that ten day break with a win under our belt and climb up the table.”

Former Cray Wanderers midfielder, Scott Kinch, Browning and left-back Jon Heath face fitness tests before the game having suffered injuries at the weekend.
